Mojo riders pull a fast one at Fort Bill

With the sun shining just about all weekend, Fort William was unrecognisable. However, it made no difference to the riders and as usual there was some dramatic racing down to the wire.

Fort William World Cup 2008

The hottest weather we've ever seen at the legendary Fort William World Cup venue.

The Mojo Orange team have set the paddock gossip going with their slick shiny skin suits. We reckon they make sense 'cos the top of the course is pretty windy.

Here's some video from the MTBCut boys.

A podium full of Orange Bikes NPS at Innerleithen - part 2

Ok, so we've all just about recovered after the second round of the 2008 NPS, held at the famous location of Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders. A challenging track winding it's way down the steep side of the hill from Minch Moor, blue skies and little to no rain in the preceding weeks contributed to a great weekend of racing for all. We didn't even need to resort to jet washing the bikes to keep them clean between runs! With racing very tight, it was an especially good weekend for Orange with a number of the podium spots being occupied by riders aboard the 224.

First of all there was local ripper Lewis Buchanan on his luminous pink, MTBCut.tv liveried 224, taking second place in Youth after leading the seeding on Saturday. Next up was the Scottish Veteran from Fort William, Alastair MacLennan, on his new orange Orange Evo taking the lead by nearly eight seconds (he was up by fifteen in seeding!).

Moving onto Elites it was a clean sweep of the top three by Orange with the Lewis' MTBCut.tv team mate Joe Barnes in third, just behind Innerleithen local and Sombrio sponsored Gary Forrest. However, taking the win was the giant from Oban, Ben Cathro, on his Mojo tweaked and Fox suspended 224. When he launched the bomb hole into the arena well up on the then leader we knew it was something special. With the clock counting away the seconds and the line getting closer, he powered across the closed road and onto the final stretch, giving it everything. And the time? A 2.56 dead, putting some gap on the majority of his rivals. All that he needed to do now was waiting for Neil Donoghue to come into sight. As the seconds counted down it became clear that he wasn't going to make it and as the clock swept past 2.56 the smile began to creep onto Bens face. His maiden Elite NPS win was in the bag on home soil. So with the top three all on Orange and fifth placed Mojo rider Chris Hutchens too, that left it as a virtual wash of Orange in the top Elite slots.

The Elites along with a number of other World Cup riders now pack up to fly out to Andorra for the second round this weekend and then are back in Scotland a week later for the Fort William round on the 8th June. Keep an eye out here for updates on how the Orange lot get on with plenty of coverage on hand both here and Descent-World over the Fort William weekend.

"At one point the hot seat was Orange rider after Orange rider, eventually won by Ben Cathro, Gary Forrest (Sombrio on a 224) 2nd, Jo Barnes MTB Cut Orange) 3rd, and Chris Hutchens 5th. Stu Thomson was trying to get some video of Cathro jumping, I saw a still shot and he was miles up."

Tom gets 2nd at Hopton

Tom Braithwaite had a good weekend. Here's how it went:

Hi Guys,

Here's a quick report of the race at the weekend, the Midlands Super Series Round 2: Hopton, near Ludlow.

On the 19th and 20th of April I raced at the 2nd round of the Midlands Super Series. Saturday was practice, the weather was sunny and the track was bone dry and riding fast.

On Sunday, we saw long showers and a generally miserable day. However the track was still riding well and in some ways made the going more interesting. I always enjoy riding in the mud, the only drawback being is what it does to your bike and the amount of cleaning you have to do to get prepared for the race run.

For the 1st run I rode well and was in 2nd behind Marc Beaumont. My run went well but I was a bit wooden on the top section. For the 2nd run the track was beginning to dry out which actually made the track slower as the mud got heavier. Most people didn’t improve on their 1st run times. I managed to go 1 second quicker but it wasn’t enough to win and I stayed in 2nd place.

Cheers, Tom

Another '10' Review for the Five Pro from MBR

One of the definitive tests of any of the mags is MBR's Trail Bike of the Year testing. Testing the best of the best in controlled conditions they really put the bikes through their paces. A while back the Orange Five scored a 9/10 in this test. Well, the news just in, is that this year the current Five Pro gets a perfect 10 in the ultimate test.

The magazine is in the shops now, so you can see how it came out at the top. You can read the Five review part on the Orange Reviews page.

P7 breaks in What Mountain Bike test review shocker!

You may or may not have seen a review of a P7 Pro in the April 2008 issue of What Mountain Bike. (if you haven't you can find it here.)

Maybe others might sweep this kind of thing under the carpet but here, if we mess up, we 'fess up. So here's what happened:

Hang on, a P7 with snapped dropouts! What's going on?

Decision time for Chip

We pride ourselves on the rideability and reliability of Orange bikes. To have a P7 linked to any kind of a failure is a shock to us as much as anyone else. We would have liked What Mountain Bike to have given us the opportunity to check this out before publishing the review so that we could have investigated the problem.

Needless to say, we got straight onto this as soon as we became aware of the issue (when the mag hit our doormat!). We build the P7 to be ultra tough, so what went wrong?

The answer is that when the review bike was built for the What Mountain BIke review, the wrong bolts were used to fix the adjustable drop-outs. We have to put our hands up and say "Our bad!". As we all know, there is no 'I' in 'Team' - but look hard enough and you can find a 'me'! The 'me' in this case was our Chip, the builder of said bike. We've sent Chip back to bolt school and he'll be making the Team Tea for quite a while yet. But ultimately this was a one off. Chip's bike building skills are second to none, but we all occasionally slip up and in this case we did. The upshot is we completely and utterly stand by the reliability of our bike, so rest assured you're in good hands

Mojo Suspension Team News

Mojo have just announced their 2008 downhill team. Stanny is staying and will be joined by two new Scots.

MOJO ANNOUNCE 2008 TEAM RIDERS

Mojo Suspension, South Wales February 2008.

Mojo Suspension is pleased to announce its 2008 UCI Race team line up.

We’re going to be continuing our support of some of mountain bikings most committed athletes again choosing a diverse line up of talents from elite downhillers to elite XC riders. Mojo’s long standing association with Orange Mountain Bikes continues and is ever stronger, it’s a partnership that enjoyed some great results over the previous season with both companies sharing a passion for making racers of all types faster!

Mojo MD Chris Porter says, "We are looking forward to trying even more new and innovative stuff this year. Testing ideas is what really fascinates us here at Mojo, whether testing ideas for equipment or riders or optimising suspension settings to the ‘Nth degree’, it’s the search for answers to the question ‘how can we go faster?’ that we love... We want to try new technologies, we want to try new equipment and generally keep pushing the boundaries to keep DH racing fresh, exciting and most of all, FAST! We’re very excited to be working directly with Fox’s race department this year and as always Orange are supporting us with the lightest DH frames out there and some startling new prototypes."

Mojo has a crack ‘in-house’ DH team of willing staff members as well as a three man elite team bolstered by the addition of ‘Cathro and Hutch’ (showing at a cinema near you...). We also have two Elite XC racers out there flying the full suspension flag and proving that rigid rears are for road bikes!

Having infiltrated the top ten in the UCI trade teams rankings in 2007, we will again be a registered UCI trade team under the name Mojo/Orange but aiming higher! We may be a little team but we aspire to be up there with the big boys!

THE LINE UP

Dan Stanbridge (Stanny) - Elite DH

We’re keeping Dan on the team for what should be his best season yet. Dan continued to show good progress in 2007, a season in which he enjoyed his best World Cup result to date and got selected for the UK World’s team, reaffirming his place as one of the UK’s top downhill riders. Anyone who watched those World Championships live on BBC TV will remember Dan’s spectacular crash; he may be the politest man to ever race Downhill but he could never be accused of not giving it 100%.

"I am really looking forward to the 2008 season, the main focus is to continue to improve my performance in the world cup series, which looks to have a good spread of events this year. We have a lot of new components for the bike, which I have been trying recently, as well as a revamped team pit, so I am looking forward to a good season."

Ben Cathro - Elite DH

Ben has been one of Scotland’s fastest downhill riders over the past few years with strong performances at both National and World Cup level. Ben is hoping to capitalise on the expertise that Mojo will bring to his bike setup to continue to improve on his performances throughout 2008.

"Joining a team like Mojo/Orange for 2008 is an amazing opportunity for me, with their legendary assistance and equipment, I can’t wait for the season to start."

Chris Hutchens - Elite DH

Chris has been one of the fastest junior riders for the past two seasons at both National and World Cup level. For 2008 he takes the step up to the Elite downhill category. "Joining a new team for 2008 has given me a huge amount of motivation to train and prepare for the season even more than previous year. I can only push myself further this year and aim to get a number of top 30 World Cup finishes and be consistent in places throughout the season."

Audi Channel - The Science of Sport - Cycling

For those of you with Sky TV, the Audi channel is currently airing a short program; The Science of Sport - Cycling. It features Orange's very own Michael Bonney talking about some of the innovations that the team are playing with, include gearboxes and belt-drives.

You can find the Audi channel by pressing '884' on your Sky remote. (We're not sure if it's on cable TV)

There are two versions of the programme, one is a 45 minute version and they are also airing it as 3 15 minute segments. It currently seems to be on a repeating schedule. So you'll need to look out for it. Sky plus-ers can now grin smugly.

UCI World Cup Rnd 3, Mont Sainte Anne, Canada

A great result for Tracey Hannah, riding to Fourth spot and making a habit of standing on the podium. In her first year at senior level and World Cup racing Tracey is already at 5th in the overall standings

Fraser Britton gives us the low down for the Mojo Orange paddock:

Under the searing hot Quebec sun, on dusty, loose course, Mojo Orange riders had a great day of racing. For the first time this season, Canadian Riders Jeff Beatty and Evan Irvine joined the European riders at World Cup Downhill #3 in Mont Ste Anne, Canada. The legendary beast of the classic events, Ste Anne was been tamed down a bit this year, losing some of the upper rock sections in exchange for a fast, bermed up highway through the woods. The high speed sweeping corners are still out in the open however, so riders risk life and limb trying to make up time any place they can now that the technical sections are gone up top.

Qualifying went well for all of the Mojo Riders save Irvine, who suffered a flat and tore his tire from his rim, causing him to DNF. Cammelini qualified in 13th, Beatty in 30th and Stanbridge squeaked in in 68th spot.

In the finals Dan was the first rider down for Orange and managed to slide into the hotseat for a decent stay after breaking a derrailleur cable in the first corner out of the gate. he would wind up in 23rd spot, not bad with what was essentially a single speed! Next up was Beatty, who crossed the line 4th behind Standbridge at the time, and would eventually sit in 27th place on the day. Cammelini was the last Mojo rider out of the box, and tore down the course for a team best 12th place finish. Strangely enough, the frenchman suffered the exact same mechanical as Stanbridge.

UCI World Cup Rnd 2, Champéry, Switzerland

The 2nd Round of the World Cup arrived at a new venue this weekend- Champéry in Switzerland. It is part of the Portes du Soleil, the region is well known to bikers with neighbouring Les Gets and Morzine hosting many an event including the World Championships in 2004. However Champéry was an unknown quantity and there was a lot of anticipation as riders headed up to walk the course.

It was clear very quickly that the track was one of the most demanding anyone had seen in a long while. Very steep and built into fresh dirt, it was spiked tyres, flat pedals and a Hail Mary before each run if you wanted to get down in one piece.

The Mojo/Orange team were using a slightly different configuration on their 224’s with revised swing arms and Tracey Hannah was looking very relaxed on her Green Machine. Whilst most of the girls were really struggling, Tracey was constantly hollering as she rode-obviously enjoying the track and enjoying her riding! A breath of fresh air to the Womens field.

With the Womens final held in warm sunshine and local girl Marielle Saner storming home to set a sub 5 minute time- by far the fastest Womens time of the weekend. Tracey Hannah, qualifying 5th, had a good run to end up a very creditable 5th place against such seasoned opposition on such a demanding track.

In the Mens event, rain was to come into play again and split the riders runs. Mojo’s Dan Stanbridge benefited from a slow qualifying run, as he set off in the dry. He finished just outside of the top 10, in 13th.

As the top 20 approached the heavens opened and turned the very difficult track in to an almost impossible proposition as rider after rider crashed in the mud and slick corners.

Julien Camellini suffered and had to ride in the worst of it. It was only when last rider down crossed the split did everyone realise how well he was riding- as he was only 1 second down on the fastest time- set in bone dry conditions! Sam Hill crossed the line less than 2 seconds off the winning time of Matti Lehikoinen. An incredible feat that left the other riders and fans alike in awe.

US Mountain Bike Open

Mojo Orange rider Jeff Beatty rode to a 27th place finish at the US Open of Mountain Biking this weekend in Vernon, New Jersey. Beatty came out of the woods within site of the finish line about 4 seconds ahead of the pace of Andrew Neethling, the current hot seat resident. He lost focus in the final high speed corner and went down in a massive cloud of dust. Unfortunately, on a course that short, it was enough to knock him out of the top 5 and relegate him to mid pack, +19.90 seconds back.

Beatty will be at the Utah NMBS race in the USA in a few weeks and then returns to the East Coast for the Mt Ste Anne World Cup round to join the rest of the Mojo team riders. Canadian members then all head out west for the Mount Seven Psychosis race, the final Canada Cup, Canadian National Championships and finally Crankworx.

2007 NPS Round 1 Innerleithen

Innerleithen was the venue for the first round of the Downhill National Points Series. There was a lot of anticipation leading up to the event- with a new promoter and the promise of a high number of international riders, there was high expectations. The track was a firm favourite for all the riders- very steep and tight at the top, this weaved down over boulders and fresh loam onto a much faster section with many jumps. The final stretch took in the classic ‘bomb hole jump’ through a RedBull banner before a dodgy off camber corner (that caught out Orange Mounted Dan Stanbridge) and a blast over the finish.

The format was slightly new this year with practice and seeding on the Saturday and then a short practice and racing on Sunday. This would have worked fine save for some logistical delays in the uplift- a system that still does not work to every ones satisfaction-long waits and only a few runs before you need to put in a run that counts…

Orange had a very strong presence at the track. As well as sponsoring the Mojo team, Cycle Jersey/ MXF AIR ART riders are using custom coloured 224’s. Along with the pro teams it is clear that the 224 is still a privateer favourite- with a large number of riders choosing it.

The weather held out, the track cut up nicely and the racing has reached a pace where it really is all nothing- the level at this race had an international quality and it is great encouragement for the younger riders who are looking to step up to the World Cups.

In the Youth category, Danny Hart took the win with a phenomenal time of 3.12. Junior men saw Ruaridh Cunningham victorious with the second fastest time of the day!! Orange mounted Chris Hutchens had a very solid 6th place. The women's event saw Rachel Atherton take the win with a very fast 3.26- beating most of the Senior mens class…

The Elite men's race saw some surprises; young Joe Barnes (Cycle Jersey MXF AIR ART) knocked Julien Cammelini (Mojo) out of the hot seat to take over as the top seeds were yet to start. Greg Minnaar was a special guest and a great treat to watch for the spectators as he was over to race on his (noisy) Honda, but failed to beat Joe's time. (A suspected crash in the woods section), but neither could Neil Donahue or Will Longden from the MBUK squad…Eventually Joe was knocked down to an eventual 8th place with Steve Peat taking the win with a 3.04sec time. Gee Atherton was second and Marc Beaumont rounded off the podium. Lee Bertram ended in a very creditable 12 place on his Orange and Rowan Sorrell 16th on a privateer 224.

The series moves onto Ae forest at the end of May for the second round, where all eyes will be on the young guns who are starting to push Mr Peat quite close…!

Julien Camellini wins at Innerleithen SDA race

We're a bit short on Detail, but we hear that Julien Camellini whupped the field at the SDA round at Innerleithen this week-end. Second was Joe Barnes and in third, Mojo's own Dan Stanbridge. Putting two Mojo Oranges on the podium.

Update: Descent World finally got the SDA results on line, check out his quote:

Elite saw another new face who promptly took home the gold in the shape of Julien Camellini for Mojo. Read Julien's Interview a few years back here. Joe Barnes pushed all the way to second in his first season of Elite whilst onboard his custom painted MFXAir 224, 0.045 seconds shy of Julien¹s time! That's what a winter down under can do... Third was Dan Stanbridge of Mojo, just over 4 seconds down. I make that a 224 whitewash for the Elite podium.

And some great shots from Steve Behr, who just happened to pop by the race.

Orange Fives on back-order

We must have hit the nail on the head with the new 2007 Orange Five. Even though we increased production, unprecedented demand means we have been caught out, particularly on 18 inch models.

We have small stocks of 14, 16 and 20 inch, but these are going fast. We will have more 18 inch Fives ready to go in the middle of April.

High Demand for P7s means we're on back-order with them too

The phenomenal success of the P7 means that we are on Back-order again. Currently we are out of stock of all sizes. We expect delivery of the next batch by Mid April. The bad news is that of that batch we are already sold-out of 19 inch models. The other sizes are going quickly. If you want one contact your dealer as soon as possible.

The next availability of 19 inch P7s will be early May.

Team Mojo a force to reckon with in Portugal Maxxis Cup

This weekend saw the opening round of the Maxxis Cup series, held at Gouveia in Portugal. The event was won by Frenchman Fabien Barel, but withiin 4 hundreths of a second came Team Mojo's Julien Camellini aboard his new 224. Dan Stanbridge was 3 seconds behind him and placed 9th, giving the Team two solid top ten placings. Ex-Orange rider Brendan Fairclough, now on the Honda Team, was 8th. It looks like the Mojo Orange guys are right on the pace.

As with all these things, we've done our best to ensure that the cheeky little gremlins won't come out to play, but we all know there's bound to be something...

At long last we have finally enabled the online bike registration system. So from now on you can register your bike directly and securely on the site.

P7 delay nightmare - here's what's going on?

We've been inundated with calls from dealers and customers enquiring when they will receive the P7 they have on order. Unfortunately the vessel carrying our frames caught fire (in August) and had to dock. Some containers were lost, although our container was not damaged, it is now subject to delays because of salvage and insurance companies procedures.

No-one can give us an accurate date by which we will receive it. We have been told dates but each deadline has passed, and without a confirmed date, we took the decision to organise replacement frames. These will be ready for paint and assembly mid/late October and will take priority in our production schedule so we hope to satisfy all outstanding orders by the end of October.

We want to apologise for this delay and, to those customers who have stuck by us, we want to say a big thanks. On the up side, the P7 was recently awarded the 2006 "Best Hardtail under £1500" prize by What Mountain Bike, so hopefully once you receive your P7, its renowned reliability will mean no more downtime from riding.

Brendan Fairclough - 5th place in Schladming secures World Number 1 Junior Status.

Brendan was clearly enjoying the course. He reckons it's the best course he has ridden all year and judging by the fact that he set Saturday's fastest practice time all seemed good.

In his race run, Brendan put in a world class ride to place him in fifth in the final. The result means that he ends the 2006 season as the UCI World Cup Junior Champion

More good news for the brits from Schladming is that ex-Orange main man Steve Peat and Tracey Moseley secured the overall World Cup titles. Congratulations to both.

Australian Tracey Hannah, took her Orange 224 to victory in Rotorua, New Zealand to become the 2006 UCI Junior Women's Downhill World Champion.

Team Orange Junior Brendan Fairclough had a nightmare result placing 17th. We know Brendan will be devastated by this and we're gutted for him too.

Gary "Flipper" Perkin tells us:
"Pretty much all the junior men crashed save the winner Cole. Even 2nd placed Blenkinsop crashed in the steep stuff. it was nuts. the course was changing all the time and i think the junior men hit the worst of it - strong wind at the top and then the Larches section was super slippery after a light shower just to add spice to it."

Tracey Hannah wins NORBA title

Tracey Hannah, having a great season on her Orange 224 notched up the overall win for the Women's NORBA title at the finial Snowmass round this week-end.

From www.velonews.com: Neither Sabrina Jonnier (Monster-Iron Horse) nor Australian Tracey Hannah (Orange) believed she had won the 2006 NMBS overall series after the finals. Jonnier, the reigning World Cup champion, had taken the victory that day, besting Hannah by five seconds. Still, the Frenchwoman didn't think she had enough points to pass the Australian. Hannah, meanwhile, figured her loss cost her the series overall.

But after the points were added up, Hannah had beaten Jonnier by a single point (968-967) to take the series.

"This morning the track was really greasy, and it was amazing how fast you could go," said 17-year-old Hannah. "I have liked racing in the United States, I have gotten to see the entire country."

Tracey Hannah, still storming the NORBAS

Thought you might like to know that Tracey won another NORBA. She thought she'd lost as she had a crash, but won by around 7 seconds. April Lawyer was second and Sabrina Jonnier 3rd. Tracey thinks she and Sabrina crashed in the same place. Tracey also qualified first by 7 seconds.

After the Sonoma race next weekend, Tracey is going to spend a week training with the Aussie junior team and coach, Scott Sharples, then she is going to go to Crank Works at Whistler. Fox are picking her up from Scott's, taking her to Whistler, then taking her back to the next NORBA race.

Round 1, NPS Downhill, Rugog Farm, Wales

The first round of the National Points Series visited a new venue in Rugog Farm, Wales this weekend. The new, open moorland track was unridden and somewhat unproven but on first look had a lot of potential to be fun and challenging. Unfortunately due to the fact it was so new, not bedded in and open to the elements it quickly became a sticky, muddy slog for the riders and for many it was not a case of 'if' you were going to crash, but 'when' and how many times...

The weather varied and was 4 seasons in one day over both days; with snow, sleet, rain and then beautiful sun all within an hour! The Saturday seeding run was cancelled, the track was reworked and an alternative bottom section was offered on Sunday.

Overview of the track Lee Bertram Brendan Fairclough
Photos: paul@motionimaging.co.uk

Mud has always been a great leveller, but it did become a lottery for many riders with many top names struggling like the rest of us in the sticky off camber corners.

However the cream does always rise to the top and Brendan Fairclough put the conditions out of his mind and pushed hard to come an impressive 5th behind eventual winner Gee Atherton and surprise second place Matt Simmonds. Royal Orange rider Lee Bertram also had a good result with a 14th on the disappointing track.

The Orange riders will take their impressive results from this weekend and look forward to the next round and the hope of a better track. The second round of the series takes place on the 14-15th May and will be held at the popular Innerleithen track in Scotland where Brendan will be challenging for the win in this, his first year as an Elite and Lee will be hoping for a top 10 finish.

Brendan Fairclough rides Orange for 2006

The rumours are true! The hottest junior rider is on Team Orange for 2006. Brendan Fairclough leapt to fame during 2005 with a silver medal at the UCI Downhill Worlds at Livigno in Italy. Last season Brendan worked with Ex-Team Orange rider Steve Peat to really hone his art. We're confident that Brendan has a big future ahead of him. He'll be setting the trails alight with blazing performances for many years to come and we're chuffed to bits that he has chosen to ride for Orange.

MBR Magazine April 2006 review of Patriot 66

“Arguably the 66's defining attribute is chassis stiffness - this frame is rock solid. It tracks superbly and when gravity is working with you it's unstoppable!”

Obviously MBT testers mean that metaphorically. The brakes on the Patriot 66 will stop you just fine. But clearly they love the Patriot 66, and rightly so. To read the test in full nip to your nearest newsagents and buy the April 2006 issue of MGBR magazine. If you can't wait that long, you can download the review in Adobe PDF format right here
